Matthew 5:13-16 (NRSV)

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot.
14 “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Prayer

Father God in the name of Jesus,

You are our Flavor and our Preserver. At the same time, You are our Light and Our Lampstand. We have been kept and we have stayed seasoned because of You. We have always found our way through the darkness of life because of You. It is You who gives us the ability to shine, even in obscurity of our situations.

Teach us how to be preservers. Teach us how to be a brighter light in this world. Teach us how to stand for You even if it means standing alone. May we look at the suffering in the world and say, “The sufferings of this present time cannot compare to the glory that shall be revealed in us!” May we look at those who are in despair and say, “Your light affliction, which is but for a moment, is producing for you a far more exceeding weight of glory!”

Forgive us for those times where we hid our light under bushels. We repent for those times where we passed up the opportunity to tell of Your goodness because of the persecution it would have caused. Forgive us of those times where we allowed fear and anxiety to prevail over our courage to stand for righteousness.

Remind us that those who are humble in spirit will have the Kingdom of Heaven. Remind us that You are the Comforter for those who mourn. Remind us that You give increase to those who are meek. Let us remember that You are the Filler of those who hunger and thirst after righteousness. May we take refuge in the fact that You are Mercy to the merciful, and You are also Revelation for those who are pure in heart. Guarantee for us that those who are the peacemakers, shall be called the sons of God. Confirm for us that those who are persecuted for righteousness sake will receive the Kingdom of Heaven in all of its glory.

Make us steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that our labor is not in vain. Make us reapers of the harvest and heavenly recipients of the crown of life that You have promised those who endure trial.

Strengthen me in the area of:________________________. Let me use this strengthened area to serve as a light to others especially during their time of darkness.

In the name of Jesus, our Life Preserver, Our Lampstand and our Light, Amen.
